Shanti Bhavan Student Leadership

In our programs, we deeply value the development of student leadership, and each year, we are proud to create powerful opportunities for our students to step up and shine. This year, our Shanti Bhavan Choir Leaders, Surya and Kirubashree, are truly doing an outstanding job.

Their impact is felt every week: they meticulously plan the choir repertoire for visitors, and ensure every performance is polished and moving. Beyond the music, they are a driving force behind the choir's discipline and success, consistently keeping everyone on time and in check. As you read their individual reflections, you will see how these remarkable young leaders are transforming themselves and their peers through the power of responsibility and music.

My name is Kirubashree, and I am currently studying in the 11th grade. I have been chosen as one of the choir leaders this year, and I have learned so much through this experience. In the beginning, I was afraid that I might not do a good job as a choir leader, but later I started believing in myself. I started getting to know everyone in the choir, and I made many friends. I learned how to work as a team with my colleagues.

I learned how to come out of my comfort zone. Previously, I struggled to make my own decisions when cooperating with a group, but since I became a choir leader, I am now confident in making my own decisions. Being the choir leader taught me to use my voice not only for singing but also to tell the choir where and when they are going wrong. This helped me grow emotionally stronger, capable of being an independent girl whom everyone can follow. I thank the BAE team for giving me the opportunity to be a choir leader, to lead the choir this year, and to work with my other classmates. I am also really happy that the bae team helped me to take a step out of my comfort zone.

Hello! My name is Surya, and I’m currently in grade 11. Being a part of the school choir has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my school life, and stepping into the role of a choir leader has made it even more special. Music has always been a huge part of who I am, and getting the chance to lead the choir has allowed me to see music from a whole new perspective.

Being a choir leader isn’t just about singing or conducting: it is about teamwork and bringing all the different, beautiful voices together as one unified sound. This has helped me improve my personality and develop skills like patience, empathy, and the ability to listen carefully. Encouraging everyone to give their best while also enjoying themselves has been challenging, but it is also a great opportunity to learn and grow. Through this journey, I have not only grown as a musician but also as a person. I have become more confident, responsible, and aware of how powerful teamwork can be. Every rehearsal and performance has taught me something new about leadership, communication, and perseverance. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to be a choir leader, and I look forward to continuing to make beautiful music together with our amazing choir.
