Building Confidence Through Consistency: Thamu’s Piano Journey

By: Elwin Daniel

Thamu is a Grade 8 student from Tamil Nadu who brings steady enthusiasm and curiosity to  his piano learning journey. Alongside his academic commitments, he is an active member of  the school concert choir, where he continues to develop a strong sense of musical awareness  and ensemble discipline. His dual involvement in both piano and choir has helped him build a  more holistic understanding of music, especially in terms of rhythm, listening, and expressive  performance.

Over the past two terms, Thamu has shown consistent commitment by regularly attending his  piano classes. This continuity has played an important role in strengthening his learning  process. He has also expressed that the shift to face-to-face lessons has had a positive impact  on his progress, allowing for clearer guidance, immediate feedback, and more focused skill  development during sessions.

In terms of growth, Thamu has gradually moved from a cautious learner to someone who is  more confident in approaching new material. While he still continues to refine his technical  fluency and reading accuracy, his willingness to engage with new pieces and respond to  feedback has significantly improved. A key milestone in his journey was his opportunity to  perform a piece from the Trinity Grade 1 repertoire during the Bhavan Brunch event. This  experience not only helped him gain performance exposure but also boosted his confidence in  playing for an audience. Ms Manu was also instrumental in shaping his talent through his VMI  sessions.

Musically, Thamu has achieved steady progress in foundational piano skills such as note  reading, rhythm control, and basic expressive playing. His participation in both solo piano  lessons and choir activities has strengthened his ability to maintain tempo, listen critically, and  follow musical direction. The performance at Bhavan Brunch marked an important step in his  learning outcomes, reflecting improved stage presence, preparation discipline, and the ability  to perform a complete piece with continuity.

Overall, Thamu’s journey reflects consistent effort, growing confidence, and the positive  impact of structured in-person learning on his musical development. With continued  dedication, effort and practice, he may go on to play for the Concert Choir.
