Broadway Magic Beans

In partnership with PS/IS 87 in Queens, teaching artists from Broadway for Arts Education worked with a group of 5th graders all year to create and star in their original musical, Broadway Magic Beans.

In the show, a group of Broadway-loving friends are enjoying a sleepover, listening to their favorite show tunes, and admiring the talent of the singers on their radio. Unfortunately, the host’s brother doesn't like Broadway at all, and in the midst of a temper tantrum, destroys the radio! Amidst the rubble, the team discovers a jar of magic beans that when shaken - or even eaten - transport them from Broadway show to Broadway show. While nervous at first, the team of friends quickly learns that they have what it takes to not only listen and admire Broadway from afar, but to actively create and perform on the stage as well.

This original devised piece mirrored the trajectory of their year as well, not only getting more comfortable with singing, dancing, and acting, but also going on 3 field-trips to see Broadway shows, and performing alongside Broadway’s Tsilala Brock at Lincoln Center. With so much magic in our first of three years with PS/IS87, we can’t wait to see what the future holds for this partnership, and to continue to bring new experiences to children hungry to develop their talents and voices.
